London, UK

What’s It All About?

The Sundance London Film and Music Festival took shape very recently. Last year’s festival was opened by the original Sundance Film Festival founder, Robert Redford. The films showcased in 2013 included Muscle Shoals and Upstream Colour. From April 25-27, this year, the third edition of the festival will feature top independent films straight from the legendary Sundance Film Festival alongside live music, panel discussions and special events.

The festival will include 21 feature films and 18 short films across five sections. A total of 23 films will make their world, international, European or UK premieres, and seven are by first-time feature filmmakers.

Watch Out For!

Opening Film

Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter

Directed by David Zellner, the film features Rinko Kikuchi, Nobuyuki Katsube and Shirley Venardand. It is about a lonely Japanese woman who becomes convinced a satchel of money buried and lost in a fictional film, is in fact, real.

The 2014 feature film programme includes hotly anticipated off-beat comedy Frank starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Michael Fassbender. Another attraction is Ryan Reynolds and Gemma Arterton in The Voices. Michael Winterbottom, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s The Trip To Italy and the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury: Dramatic and Audience Award-winning Fruitvale Station are among the highlights of the festival this year.

Some of the films in the Narrative Section include:

• Obvious Child

• Memphis

• Blue Ruin

• Drunktown’s Finest

• The One I Love

• Voices

• They Came Together

• Hits

• Little Accidents

Shorts

Only the best short films make the Sundance cut and this year a shorts roller-coaster of drama and comedy and fiction will be presented at the fest. The stellar line-up includes Sundance Film Festival short film competition winners: Love. Love. Love, Burger, Yearbook, I Think This Is The Closest To How The Footage Looked, The Cut as well as Short Film Grand Jury Prize-winning Of God And Dogs.

Special Events

A panel on The Art of Film Music will discuss the process of composing original music for films, and solo artist and former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker will join the Hybrid Vigour Documentary panel alongside former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins, to explore how British documentary is pushing the boundaries in challenging the genres of music, biography and archive film.

Archive has been announced as the first headlining music act for the 2014 festival. Also, free live music performances organised by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) will take place.

From The Collection

As part of the special events, a selection of films discovered by the Sundance Film Festival include:

• Memento

• Reservoir Dogs

• Winter’s Bone
